• A few trailers for games I'm excited about: Brutal Legend, Mass Effect 2, Dragon Age, Scribbenauts, Uncharted 2,

• A Marvel executive stated that they're not going to be doing "crappy movie-based games anymore."  After the pleasant surprise that was the Wolverine game, I can't say I'm complaining.

• Much of the team at Endrant Studios that worked on Wolfenstein (released TODAY) has been laid off.

• Capcom's Dark Void is going to be released on January 12th, kicking off a surprisingly busy 1st quarter.

• Crytek says that the current generation of systems will last until at least 2012.

• EA had a few announcements today:
• EA Sports Active More Workouts announced for Wii
• Bad Company 2 release date in early March, Dante's Inferno release date in Februrary
• Brutal Legend is getting a demo on September 17th

• Video Games Live will be playing a show at GDC China.

PC and mobile news

• Creative Assembly announced Napoleon: Total War for release next February.

• Silent Hunter 5 was announced, releasing early next year.

• PS3 Firmware 3.0 revealed, the battery indicator has finally been fixed!

• And the worst kept secret of the games industry, the PS3 Slim, has finally been revealed.  It includes a 120gb harddrive and the standard features of the current models out there (no backwards compatibility).  Launches in September for $299.

• An FCC listing also indicates that a 250gb one might be in the works, as well.

• Sony announced their PSP Minis series, a line of small (under 100mb) downloadable games for the system.  They also revealed a digital comics program for the PSP.

• Singstar is going to be integrated in with Playstation Home, somehow.

• Housemarque, the team behind Super Stardust HD, revealed their next game: a twin stick shooter titled 'Dead Nation'.

• LittleBigPlanet PSP has no multiplayer, but is supposedly a complete package beyond that omission.

• A water based pack is coming as LittleBigPlanet DLC.

• This Invisimals trailer is trying way too hard.

Microsoft news

• Fable 3 is coming in late 2010.

• And Fable 2 is going to be cut up and released over Xbox Live in episodic chunks.  The first part will be free, then there will be a couple purchasing options, but no prices have been announced.

• A Lost Planet 2 demo should hit sometime Wednesday.

• Chromehounds' servers are being shut down in January.  So many memories.

• iPhone users: In celebration of QuakeCon, Doom Resurrection is $2.99 and Wolf 3D Classic is $.99 for for a couple days.  The Wolfenstein RPG has also been released, and it is excellent.

• Nielsen Media Research also says that more people are playing games now than ever before, possibly because of the value that games bring in this economy.

• DLC impacts retail sales by causing gamers to buy less retail games and not trade them in as much?  You don't say!

• And Call of Juarez 2 is getting DLC in the coming months, though this isn't unexpected for a new game now.

Industry and multi-console news

• Go buy Jonathan Coulton's new CD/DVD.  At least download it.  Pay money if you feel like it so he keeps making more awesome stuff.

• The hilariously awful boxart for Dead Space: Extraction was revealed, prompting Joystiq to photoshop the screaming face into the picture for every article today.

• The Chinese "ban on gold farming" is not so much a ban on gold farming as it is banning using in-game currency to buy real items or gamble. That's kind of the inverse of the gold farming problem.

• GameIndustry has an interview with Sega Europe's managing director Gary Dunn.  He really likes the new motion controllers.

• Woo hoo! If you live in Europe, DJ Hero costs about $50 more than in America, coming in at £108.

• Eidos's president says that everyone should bring their 'A' game or expect commercial failure.

• Though not exactly gaming news, The Pirate Bay was bought out and will be transformed into a more legal P2P service somehow.  Isn't everyone even halfway intelligent on private trackers now anyway?

• New registered "Hero" titles, but these ones are registered by the Fitness Company and are titled things like Fitness Hero.

• Fun Fact: Suda51 really REALLY likes Burnout Paradise.

• Rumor-town: There was a Wii version planned for Brutal Legend, but it's been scrapped.

PC and mobile news

• Ether Saga, a super adorable and incredibly generic Asian MMO, is now online and free to play.

• Blizzard has been filing a number of trademarks for the word "Cataclysm", which looks to be some kind of code name for Battle.NET 2.

• Blizzard also thinks that one should build games for the hardcore gamer, as accessibility can be added later in the design process.

• ...and as expected a SERIOUS ONLINE PETITION demanding that LAN play be added in Starcraft 2 has been started.

• The tech trees for Starcraft 2 have been released.

• AlienWare is now offering a very slick looking "gamer monitor".

• Someone already hacked together a PS1 emulator for the Palm Pre.

Nintendo news

• The top ten most played games on the Wii up to now. I'm actually kind of surprised to see two Harvest Moon titles on there (Rune Factory is Harvest Moon don't try to trick me).

• A new Final Fantasy game is coming to the DS, sounds awfully familiar to FF1 except with teenagers.

Sony news

• Another Uncharted 2 multiplayer demo is in development.

• Here's a list of Capcom PS1 and PSP games that will soon be out for download on the PSN.

Microsoft news

• If your Xbox red-ringed with the E74 error, you should have received a refund check in the mail by now f you were previously charged for it.

• A slew of information came out today about the case of private patent holders vs Microsoft over who invented Xbox Live.

• The super kid-friendly game making software Kodu is now available on Xbox Live.

• The awesome strategy game Band of Bugs is getting avatar support and a new expansion priced at 240msp/$3.

• A truck in Canada was raided of 1,300 Xbox 360s.

Industry and multi-console news

• The top 30 game franchises of 2008 have been tallied up by Wedbush Morgan.

• The entire development team at Blue Omega, developers of Damnation, have been laid off. This could be directly related to the fact that I have never heard of Damnation. (ed 2 note: it was a really mediocre FPS)

• Red Faction Guerrilla is getting 3 DLC packs, the first of which is titled "Badlands" and will be released in August for $10/800msp.

• Kotaku has a preview of My Sims Agents.

• NBA 2K10 is getting a hugeass "limited edition" that comes in a giant locker that can hold 20 gmaes.

• Konami's Vandal Hearts, the upcoming downloadable strategy RPG sequel, seems to have slipped from its September release date to a "Winter 2009" release.

• Acclaim is giving their MMO SpellBorn a complete redevelopment.

• Here's a pretty neat monster size comparison chart for the newest Monster Hunter game.

PC and mobile news

• The Issue 15 update is out for City of Heroes. It's primarily a cosmetic update but also updates the mission creator.  Wait for the upcoming expansion in a couple months for a real update.

• The team behind Painkiller: Overdose is working on another game on the engine titled Dreamkiller.  Expect shooting waves and waves of enemies and smiling the entire time.

• Battlefield Heroes has two Michael Jackson themed outfits available now for free.

• The vile tasting Mana Potions is doing a cross promotion with the MMO Lunia.

Nintendo news

• Sega talks about how much they like mature rated games on the Wii.

• Engadget has a hands on with MotionPlus and the current games available for it.

• Renegade Kid, the guys behind Dementium and Moon, is working on a DS platformer titled Maximillian and the Rise of the Mutant Mudds.

Sony news

• According to some kind of Taiwanese hardware site, Sony has signed contracts with two hardware manufacturers to produce the PS3 slim for delivery within the next month.

• The PlaystationNetwork was down for most of the day today for maintenance.

Microsoft news

• Last.fm will be free to Live Gold members, whereas Silver members can only use it for 3 hours per month.

• Oh good, a direct sequel to Gears of War 2 has come out as a trashy paperback novel. Barf.

• The former VP of THQ is now the VP of MTV Games.

• Here's a neat 7 minute documentary on the making of Earthworm Jim.

• Serious Sam is being remade in HD for XBLA and the PC.  The XBLA version will also support 4 player local and online co-op, howbout that?

• Apparently laying off a ton of people and throwing millions more dollars at videogames make them good?  Works for THQ!

• If you care about the new Kingdom Hearts game here's an interview that might be interesting?

• Sega comments on the death of Micheal Jackson, though I feel like it'd be more appropriate if they didn't. Moonwalker really wasn't a shining moment for Jackson's history.

• Gamasutra has an interview with the president of EA Games.

• The system designer from Mass Effect 2 is interviewed in a vaguely rude way.

• Followed by the lead designer from Mass Effect 2 claiming there will be no new game + in ME2, so the continuation into ME3 would be smoother.

• Trine will be available on the PC for $30, but will only be $20 on PSN.

• This interview mentions that Overlord 2 DLC should be announced soon.

• Konami trademarked a new Suikoden game, lets see if anything comes of it.

• A new FF11 mini-expansion will be available for preorder on July 5th.

• And we have our annual Dreamcast game release.  Move along, nothing to see here.

• Rock Band gets a 3 pack of Foreigner songs and another Warped Tour pack for DLC this week.  Regular prices and all that.

PC and mobile news

• You'll one day be able to switch factions in World of Warcraft for an "equivalent" character.

• Blizzard says they're planning to have a 4 to 6 month public beta for Starcraft 2.  Also there won't be LAN play in Starcraft 2, what the shit?

• More expansions have been announced for both Everquest 1 and 2.

• Gold farming has been banned by China, will continue normally as if nothing happened.

• Rolando, which was previously going to be completely removed from the iTunes App Store before Rolando 2, will remain available due to enough outcry about it.

• Carmack loves the iPhone, and says that most Id games will come out for it eventually in one form or another.  Doom Resurrection is out, anyone played it yet?
